Saturday 8th November – Full Day – Anne Daye Study Day: The English Country Dance c.1700 and the French Connection

A day workshop both practical and theoretical, introducing the French sources for the country dance when it was introduced to the French ballroom. An introduction will sketch out French knowledge of the English vernacular genre from c. 1620 and its attraction to young courtiers with a staid and boring ballroom repertoire in Paris. Participants will then explore the two documents by the French master Lorin with notations of the dances he collected on his trip to London. As the French technique took over in English ballrooms, we will explore its impact on the country dance in England.
